The short version
Depositing at an online pokies site is the quick half of moving money; getting it back out is the slow half, which our withdrawals guide covers. A deposit almost always clears in seconds to minutes, and every Australian-facing site we track holds balances in Australian dollars, so there is no currency conversion to watch. The two things worth thinking about before you load an account are which method clears fastest and which one you will also be able to withdraw to.
The deposit methods, compared
- PayID is the one most Australian pokies players reach for. You pay from your own banking app to the operator’s PayID, your bank shows the payee before you confirm, and the funds arrive in seconds.
- Osko and bank transfer move money between banks. Where both banks are Osko-enabled it is near-instant; otherwise it settles in the next banking batch.
- POLi lets you pay through your bank’s own login without a card, which some players prefer and some banks discourage.
- Neosurf is a prepaid voucher you buy with cash or card and redeem as a deposit, which keeps the deposit off your bank statement but cannot be used to withdraw.
- Crypto, usually USDT, settles on the network’s own timing and suits players who already hold it; it carries its own price and tax considerations.
Plain credit and debit card deposits are the exception rather than the rule here, because Australian banks increasingly block gambling transactions on cards.
Minimum deposits
There is no single minimum: each site sets its own, and the smallest sites start low. One figure to watch is that the minimum to load an account can be lower than the minimum needed to qualify for a welcome bonus. Our A$10 minimum deposit guide lists the sites that take the smallest deposits, and the cashier on each site shows the figure that applies to the method you choose.
Your deposit and your bonus
For most welcome offers the deposit is what triggers the bonus, and the amount you put in sets the bonus you receive. Two numbers decide whether it is worth it: the minimum deposit that qualifies, and the turnover the bonus then carries. A large match on paper can be poor value if the turnover is high, which is the whole point of our bonus terms report; the welcome bonus guide orders sites by the lowest turnover. Work out the deposit that qualifies for the offer you want before you load more than you need to.
Pick a method you can also withdraw to
The mistake that costs people time is depositing by a method they cannot be paid out to. Neosurf and some card routes are deposit-only; PayID and bank transfer generally work in both directions. Some sites also pay winnings back to the method you deposited with, so the choice you make at deposit can decide how, and how fast, you are paid later. Reading the withdrawals guide before your first deposit is worth the few minutes.
Depositing safely
Only ever deposit inside the site’s own logged-in cashier, and only at a site you have already checked using the steps in our is-it-legit guide. The scam to refuse flatly is the “agent” top-up: someone on Telegram or WhatsApp offers to load your balance if you send money to their personal account. There is no protection in that, and it can get your own payment account limited. Keep the name on your payment method the same as the name on your account, so verification does not snag your first withdrawal, and only ever deposit what you have decided in advance to spend.
